The JEAN VILAR CENTRE, which opened in Avignon in 1979, offers exhibition spaces, a video-library and a public library, all of which are dedicated to the performing arts. Its double aim is to bring awareness to Jean Vilar's life work and philosophy as well as safeguard the memory of the Avignon Festival which has today become an event of international size and importance. The Centre offers encounters with playwrights, live performance, pedagogical workshops and an editorial programme highlighting the extraordinary adventure of popular theatre and Vilar's utopia.

The CAHIERS JEAN VILAR publish, two to three times a year, thematic reviews of about 100 fully illustrated pages in which can be found research analyses, interviews, unpublished articles and enquiries, all of which bear witness to Jean Vilar's thinking, placed within a contemporary perspective which feeds dialogue between the past and the future, without sinking into nostalgia.
